Now Is The Time To De-lurk!

It's my first ever national de-lurking week as a blogger. I'm growing up! For all of you who come by, linger, or just breeze through on occassion, now is your chance to rip off the blindfolds and show yourselves. You can leave fake names, but give me something to go on other than indecipherable numbers by leaving me a comment. An inquiring mind wants to know. Who are you all?

Plus, I really need the distraction from work, so bring on the comments!

Thanks to you for this button!

I have been lurking for awhile. I stumbled onto your blog several months ago during a particularly bad day at work (I'm also an attorney) by searching for blogs about how being a young associate at a large law firms sucks.

On so many levels, I understand the disgust you fell towards your law firm and desire to get away from meaningless litigation that only serves to profit greedy, personality-less, self-absorbed attorneys.

I'm a second year associate in a midwest law firm that is surprisingly similar to your law firm. I have my own Dragon Lady who regularly makes my life miserable. It is beyond my understanding how law firms are able to find such heartless, despicable attorneys to do the bidding of their equally despicable clients. Where do these people come from?

For awhile, I've justified staying at the firm because I could do pro bono work that I'm passionate about. However, a few weeks ago I was informed that the work was not considered "attorney-work" even though it requires me to be in court several times a month. The bottom line is that a young partner wants to flex some muscle by increasing the profitability of our office, which apparently means cutting out all pro bono work. In addition to cutting support for pro bono, two partners have taken it upon themselves to record when I'm in the office (even though I have never missed a deadline, met my billable requirement, and am generally only away for firm-related activities). I'm certain the time clock and chains on the desk will be installed soon.

Like you, I've been debating between trying another law firm (even though this idea makes my stomach ache) or waiting to find the "perfect" job. I still don't know where I'll come down on this issue. But I've decided to begin looking for and applying to any jobs I find that seem remotely interesting. Hopefully by changing the environment I'm in, I can get sufficient clarity of mind to figure out what I want to do for the long haul.

Hang in there, Buttercup!!

I'm fascinated by sargument's comment. He/She sounds like your twin!

I'm about as de-lurked as I can get, considering that I'm hear reading and commenting all the time!

Ally Bean, Starshine, Wordnerd, and N. Mallory - Thank you all for your presence here. I always look forward to your comments.

Sparky - I love having you around! Every girl needs at least one male perspective.

Sarguments - I think Starshine was right, you're my long lost twin! I'm enraged on your behalf that the partners told you that pro bono work was not attorney work and that they've started monitoring your hours. Here, a partner told me something similar about pro bono work (that paying clients should always take precedence), and my firm monitors the comings and goings of all of the associates. It's infuriating. I can't believe the partners at your firm are so idiotic as to cut pro bono. That's going to hurt them with future candidates. It's also plain stupid because pro bono work is one of the best ways for associates to get practical lawyering experience (as demonstrated by your courtroom time). Idiots! Good for you for deciding to look elsewhere. Today I talked to my second recruiter and I have to say that I'm actually feeling HAPPY!!! I'm on my way, and I'm starting to believe that I might actually be able to land somewhere that I enjoy working. How incredible would that be? Please keep me posted on your situation. Good luck breaking free!

You might only think I'm lurking, but there's something wrong with the blogger comment screen.

I'm going to step and PiYo class again tonight...and I have three projects on needles...and I'm sleeepy. Didn't I just get back from vacation?

Lass - I'm hoping to get out to watch a movie. I wish I was going to PiYo class. I haven't seen one of those yet in NYC.

I lurk here often! You seem like a fabulous woman, Buttercup, and I'll continue my lurking. I'm glad to read in one of your recent posts that being out of your relationship with Raj has left you feeling more intact and less emotionally wrecked on a weekly basis. That speaks volumes!

Keep writing, and I'll keep reading!

Sisterfriend - Your lurking is very welcome. About the relationship, I'm still processing but I feel better than I have in a long time. The independent me is back and she's happy to be here. :)

do we count as lurkers? I mean, we didn't have to read this blog to know how much you love your magic wand.
