Thursday Thirteen # 20

Thirteen Issues/Questions Regarding Blogger

1) Some people - I'm not naming names - have switched over to Beta Blogger (the "new version" of Blogger), and it's causing me problems when I attempt to comment on their sites.

2) Although the "new version" says that you can sign in with your Google or Blogger password, for some bizarre reason several sites that have switched over to the dark side do not accept my Blogger password for commenting purposes.

3) I have a google account but it's in my actual name and signing on with it would defeat the anonymity of my blog. My firm would not like that.
4) Neither would I; I like my anonymity. It's fun!

5) In order to leave comments on those sites, I've had to leave them "anonymously" and then write in my name and http address into my comment. That takes forever.

6) Is this all part of Google's master plan to googlize the world?

7) This is all making me think that maybe I would like to switch from Blogger to somewhere else. Any suggestions?

8) But, if I switched to somewhere else, then I would still have the same problem commenting upon sites that have switched to the new version of Blogger, right?

9) Blogger has been pretty good to me, but there have been numerous problems with publishing. On occasion, I've lost whole posts, or been shut out of the system for hours. Does this happen on other systems, such as Typepad?

10) Bean & I have been wanting to revamp our blog with a new design. If we do this while we're still with Blogger, will that carry over to a new system?

11) I'm reaching now, to make it to 13, but I have been aggravated on occasion when Blogger refuses to let me post pictures. Often times that's what takes me the longest, not writing, but waiting for my pictures to post!

12) My last point of frustration has nothing to do with Blogger, but it has to do with my inability to reach it as frequently as I could before I moved into my new place. Frey was holding my computer for me in safe-keeping, and we have not yet worked out the logistics of me getting it back. That means that my only computer access since I moved has been at work!

13) At work, since our computer system limits our ability to download, not only can I not play solitaire, I can't download the tags from del.icio.us or bloglines that let me organize my links. Oh, the aggravation!

I switched my blog to Blogger Beta, and as far as publishing posts and adding photos, it is much easier. It is also easier to revamp the look of your blog. The problem I've found has been with commenting. It's frustrating that Blogger and Blogger Beta can't sync up enough for a girl to be able to comment the way she used to. Lots of people are frustrated by this, and it totally bugs. I've been commenting the way you do by manually typing in my screen name and website address. Puh-leeze!

Alison and Starshine - We'll I'm glad to know it's not just me!! I just signed up for google so I'll try to see if that simplifies things. I've allowed google one step closer to total world domination. Ahhhh!

Other would work instead of anonymous, but there is still the typing.

If you switch templates, YOU WILL LOSE IT when you go to Beta.

I'm having some beta problems too. I can't seem to get the google toolbar "SEND THIS TO BLOGGER" button to work.

A thought about the google account... why not set up an anonymous one as well? That way it might work for you.

Have a happy Thursday!

I switched to Wordpress. The free service is good, but slightly limiting, which I've learned to live with. Their paid service is better, more flexible, and not really that expensive. I may go that route one day. I still have my blogger acct for some blogs I read that don't let me comment 'anonymously' or as 'other'. But I don't like that the "Beta" version of their comments doesn't play nice with the auto-complete functionality of the IE web browser. I admit, it's a pain. But I like the people enough to deal with it. When enough people move off because of their Beta app (and I know several who have or are going to make the move) then they'll make it more user-friendly to other platforms.

Even though I'm on Beta, I still run into the error when trying to comment on regular Blogger sites - it's so very frustrating.

I loved your list - I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets frustrated.

Happy TT!

I’m up!

Hi!

I had a blogger account and actually did a TON of revamping with it - then switched to blogger beta the next day. All my revamping and work was GONE. SOOOO frustrating!

I switched One Woman Army to wordpress then after seeing others use it - and have to say that I really do like it. Its very easy to use and has some great schemes on it.

Hmmmm... It's sounding like Wordpress is getting the most positive votes.

Just for the record, I've had a pretty good experience with Blogger overall. Any system has its bugs, so it's really just a matter of which bugs annoy you the least.

As far as #11, you can always upload personal photos to a free host (I've heard good things about Flickr and I use Picasa myself, but if you're not wanting to add to Googledomination, you won't want to go there) and just add an image tag in the html. You can add anything that's already on the internet by linking directly to the image source.

You can contact me if you're interested in more specific directions.

These kinds of service disruptions will happen with nearly any service. They may not be happening right now, but they may happen later. That's one of the reasons I've always had my own site: yes, sure, I don't get it for free; but I know that my provider works to keep all of their customers' sites online or they lose business. (Now I'm my own provider...but that's another story. Then again, talk to me about other blog-hosting alternatives!!)

Another reason for the pauses is the switchover from regular Blogger to Blogger beta. Ideally, these changes would all be thoroughly tested before they're rolled out - even rolled out onto the free services. In the real world, though, so many providers either do half-assed rollouts (Yahoo with Webring comes to mind) or do minimal testing, reasoning that since the service is free, they won't lose "business" if the subscribers move elsewhere (or that, since the service is free, the users will grumble but won't move anywhere else). It's a lousy business model to follow, especially for a company whose mission statement supposedly contains the words, "Don't be evil".
